Introduction
to ECCE’s
‘instil’ initiative Instil:
gradually but firmly establish (an idea or
attitude) in someone’s mind ECCE aims to INspire,
STImulate, and Lead its
member organisations – opening up pathways to an exchange of good practice,
innovative ideas and encouraging initiatives that will stimulate and encourage
participation of our organisations and their members. ECCE has undertaken a series
of actions to promote the highest technical and ethical standards within the
profession, as well as seeking to provide a source of impartial advice, and
promote co-operation with other pan-European organisations in the construction
industry. In 2000 ECCE published its
guidelines for a European Code of Conduct of the Civil Engineering Profession.
At its Spring meeting in Madrid in 2003, ECCE’s Environment Task Force,
chaired by Santiago Hernandez of Spain, issued an Ethical Commitment to
Sustainable Civil Engineering, which was adopted by the General Assembly. Over
the last two years, ECCE has additionally undertaken a form of
‘benchmarking’ for its member organisations by arranging regular
presentations on issues of concern to its members. Most recently these have included encouraging young people into the profession and making government
aware of our concerns. These were
given respectively by Jyrki Keinaenen of RIL in Finland and Richard
Coackley of the U.K. We intend to include in this area other material to motivate and inspire members to create, promote and extend best practice in whatever they undertake.
