  • The Bathing Water Directive requires Member States to monitor areas during bathing season and to report results to the Commission which then produces a report on the quality of European bathing water. The Commission has set up an internet site at http://europa.eu.int/water/water-bathing/index_en.html. This gives quality development for each location since the first year of monitoring under the directive.....it also provides as useful "tourist atlas" to enable people to find out what the bathing quality is in their country or holiday destination. Further information about bathing water quality is also available on the internet at http://www.enviroment-agency.gov.uk; for England and Wales, at http://www.sepa.org.uk for Scotland and at http://www.epa.ie for Ireland.

  • The "Blue Flag" Campaign
The European Commission, along with other organisations, offer financial support to the Blue Flag Campaign run by the FEEE (Foundation for Environmental Education in Europe) established in 1987. Pan-European  information about this campaign may be obtained from the website at http://www.feee.org. A European Blue Flag Campaign website was launched in 1999 at http://www.blueflag.org. This gives maps and list of Blue Flag sites, detailed information about the criteria, application procedures and details of national operators.
