On Friday 27th October ECCE held its Task Force meetings and the main European Council meeting at the headquarters of the Institution of Civil Engineers at One Great George Street, Westminster.

After the Friday meetings, members were able to exchange news and views at an evening reception and dinner hosted by NCE and ICE respectively.  The European Council meeting resume on Saturday 28th October at the Old Jordans Conference Centre near Beaconsfield.  Despite changeable weather conditions, some members opted to tour the surrounding countryside of Buckinghamshire and Berkshire after the meeting, concluding with a brief visit to the historic bridge at Marlow, designed by Tierney Clark who was also responsible for Budapest’s famous Chain Bridge.

A Snap-Shot of Task Force Developments:

Ø       Mutual Recognition Task Force is looking at the possible creation of a European Register for Professional Civil Engineers.  This is being considered in the context of the Engineers’ Mobility Forum and the Asian Pacific Economic Co-operation activities.

Ø       Education Task Force is leading a Working Group which is part of the EU-funded EUCEET project mentioned above.  The ECCE Task Force topic is “What industry wants from civil engineering education”.

Ø       The priority for the Research and Development Task Force is to improve EU funding for construction R&D plus dissemination to industry.

Ø       Information Technology Task Force works on two fronts: looking at both raising the level of construction IT awareness and usage and promoting business-to-business and e-commerce.

Ø       Environment Task Force deals mainly with providing technical advice and support to the EU institutions on the concerns of the built environment sector regarding proposals for EU regulations

Public Procurement Task Force is reviewing proposals to amend EU directives and raising European awareness of the concept of “Best Value”.
