ECCE JOINS THE EUROPEAN CONSTRUCTION FORUM - OCTOBER 2001

Commission and Industry debate issues of concern over luncheon at the European Construction Forum.

In early October, ECCE President Antonio Adao da Fonseca  and Acting Secretary General Diana Maxwell attended the European Construction Forum’s ‘Presidents Meeting’.  At the meeting ECCE was formally welcomed as a member of ECF.  Presidents and Secretaries General held morning discussions on key issues affecting the construction sector, including current proposals to amend and streamline existing Directives on public procurement and the more recent proposals for a Directive regarding energy-efficiency in construction.

Over luncheon, senior officials from D.G. Enterprise outlined the Commission’s current thinking on construction issues.  ECF has expressed its concern about possible cut-backs in sectoral activity relating to construction.  The importance of the unit as a catalyst between member states and industry’s activity across Europe was emphasised and the Commission urged industry to put forward practical plans for support it could offer to the Commission’s role.  An additional presentation was made on environmental issues by Prudencio Perrera, Director responsible for Environmental Quality of Natural Resources within the Commission’s D G Environment.

WHAT IS THE ECF? The European Construction Forum (ECF) is a platform for co-operation on issues of common interest between independent organisations representing key players in the construction sector and participating on a voluntary basis.  It is not an umbrella organisation and any position paper only carries the names/logos of those ECF members who support it.

Current ECF membership comprises the Architects’ Council of Europe; European Cement Association; the Council of European Producers of Materials for Construction; the European Asphalt Pavement Association; European Council of Civil Engineers; European Federation of Engineering Consultancy Associations; Federation Europeenne des Travailleurs du Batiment et du Bois; Federation de l’Industrie Europeenne de la Construction and the Union Europeenne des Promoteurs-Constructeurs.

The Secretariat is run by FIEC whose web-site on www.fiec.org contains further information on the ECF.
