| THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION'S CONSTRUCTION UNIT - CONSTRUCTION CONTACT POINT CEASES ITS ACTIVITY |
Mr
Karlheinz Zachmann of the European Commission, who has run a Construction
Contact Point for the major pan-European bodies in the construction sector for
the last three years, has now taken retirement from the European Commission. With his departure, the Construction Contact Point – a
series of regular meetings at which expert speakers from other Directorates
General of the European Commission were invited to give briefings to
construction sector representatives – will cease its activity.
Long-standing
members of ECCE first got to know Mr. Zachmann when he was Head of the
Construction Unit some years ago. In
recent years he has been a welcome guest at ECCE meetings where he has provided
a well-informed and thorough picture of developments within the Commission which
affect professional civil engineers.
With the support of his assistant Annie Troiepolski, he has been
responsible for the EURAFEDAC database of all pan-European Construction related
organisations which represents individual members.
This database will now be absorbed into the work of the Construction
Unit. His interest and concern to
ensure effective liaison between Commission and industry will be missed as will
his ability to rapidly produce Minutes of Meetings ‘by return’ in any of the
three working languages which he used in his day-to-day business.

Mr Zachmann has been experiencing ever closer involvement with the construction over the last two years as he has planned and had built a house in Brussels. |

The
Construction Unit is also involved in CIRCA,
a www-based environment to provide on-line services and offer a common virtual
space for work-groups and projects. CIRCA
is organised around Interest Groups, each of which is a private workspace to
enable a group of people to collaborate. Membership
is restricted to those who are directly involved in the operations of any group
but finalised documents are published on the public part of the construction
site (see above). Current Working
Groups include the Standing Committee on Construction; Group of Notified Bodies;
Fire Regulators Group; Eurocodes; Regulators Group for Construction Products in
contact with Drinking Water and the European Organisation for Technical
