MUNICH – 2003 – the band plays on…

Munich in autumn is an international melting pot bringing together all nationalities to the ‘Wiesen’ for the world-renowned Oktoberfest.  The ECCE meeting in Munich coincided with the opening weekend of the beer festival.  Unexpectedly warm weather created a carnival atmosphere.

On the Friday evening, ECCE members had enjoyed a traditional Bavarian meal in a forest location on the outskirts of Munich.  To make the conclusion of the 38th meeting of the European Council of Civil Engineers, our hosts, the Deutsche Sektion des ECCE arranged for ECCE members and partners to enjoy supper and live entertainment at the Wiesen in the “Hippodrom” tent.  Each Oktoberfest beer tent contains many hundreds of people: the 14 fest halls or beer tents offer seating for 100,000 people.  Tables with benches form a kind of indoor ‘Biergarten’ where traditional Bavarian country fare of radishes, ‘Obatzta’ (a special cream cheese) sausages and roast meats is offered, together with jugs of beer produced by Munich’s six major breweries.  Guests join in enthusiastically with the popular music provided by live bands.

This lively event marked the conclusion of two busy days of meetings.

Smiles all round as members toast the conclusion of another meeting
